Timișoara Saracens are the new champions of Romania after beating rivals Stiinta Baia Mare 18-15 away from home in a tight contest.
Wings Stephen Shennan and Tangimana Fonovai scored a try each, while scrum half Valentin Calafeteanu converted a try and a two penalties to secure the National Championship.
The Saracens Global Network partner club, who made their debut in the Challenge Cup Qualifying Competition by beating Spanish champions Valladolid earlier this season, have enjoyed a truly remarkable season picking up three trophies, adding to their Romania Cup and King’s Cup triumphs to underline their status as Romania’s finest side.
Timisoara could not only boast the most players selected in national side for the Rugby World Cup, but also the leading scorer of the championship, Vali Calafeteanu – 119 points, the Superliga’s leading try scorer, Fonovai Tangimana (8).
Speaking after his side secured a historic double, Timisoara Saracens Head Coach Grainger Heikell praised the club’s togetherness.
“I knew that we would not give up fighting” said the New Zealander.“There was a lot of pressure on the boys but we had the support of friends and family, and for that we thank those who all played their part. We expect next week match against Rovigo (Challenge Cup qualifier) will be a different kind of pressure, because in the past we have not had European Cup rugby to consider; now we can relax a little after the win and try an play to our potential.”
Timisoara skipper, Stelian Burcea: “We proved that we are the most in form team of Romanian rugby. We’re delighted to win the title. We proved that we are a united team with players who are hitting the heights of the sport”.
From everyone at Saracens, congratulations Timisoara Saracens.
