Timisoara Saracens looking for improved performance in last home game of Challenge Cup
The Challenge Cup returns to action this weekend with Timisoara getting back into competitive action for the first time in 2017.
It’s been a tough European campaign for the Challenge Cup newcomers so far but they will be hoping to put in a solid performance when they take on Stade Francais at home this Saturday.
Timisoara’s round one meeting with the French side ended in a 27-0 defeat for the Romanians but Timisoara coach Grainger Heikell knows his team will want to improve on that result in front of a home crowd.
“Playing at home in front of family and friends for the last time at EPCR level this season is important to our players” he said. “For this reason they are very motivated to produce a much more consistent, accurate and competitive performance."
Reflecting on Timisoara’s Challenge Cup performance so far Heikell added “the first four rounds of EPCR have been a tough experience for us and we would have liked to have performed better. However, the results are not totally unexpected given the calibre of the opposition we are now playing against which clearly is a massive 'step up’ from what we are usually exposed to in Romania. The key is we learn rapidly from the exposure and experience then make the adjustments required to further grow and develop. As with all growth and development this will take time but qualifying for the EPCR is the first step of what the club and team hope will be an ongoing journey to ultimately play off contention in the future."
Domestic competition does not return for Timisoara until late March but the side are top of the Superliga table and are hoping their Challenge Cup experience will stand them in good stead for the rest of their season as they continue to develop as a team.
