To win the double is incredible - Goode
For Alex Goode, the 2018/19 campaign will live long in the memory.
European Player of the Year, selected in BT Sport’s Dream Team for the season and a double winner.
He alongside the whole group have put in a hell of a lot of effort this term and have had to dig deep on occasions, none more so than Saturday in the Gallagher Premiership final.
Exeter Chiefs held an 11-point lead midway through the second half but two late tries helped Saracens to a 37-34 victory which sealed a fifth domestic crown.
“We had to work incredibly hard,” Goode said.
“We obviously didn’t start well and our best bits were actually after they scored. We weren’t really as good as we should have been but we found a way and I think that speaks volumes of the group.
“Exeter are an unbelievably good side who came at us again and again and again. We had to really dig deep as a group and everyone coming off the bench to find a way and to score at the end like we did was just remarkable.
“It’s a remarkable by everyone in the squad, the coaches and the staff. To win the double is incredible.”
Saracens will now have five weeks off before preparation for the 2019/20 season begins and Goode insists there is a want amongst the squad to keep on winning.
“We’ve earned a good break because we’re exhausted!” he joked.
“There’s a hunger amongst the group; we want to keep winning, we want to keep doing this and be in finals every year and I think that’s the great strength of this group that we can improve, we can do better and when we come back next season we’ll look at how we can do that and try and raise our standards.”
