Tour Success for Sarrie's RFC

Saturday 6th May saw the 2nd annual tour for Sarrie’s RFC, this time to Coventry.

Sarrie’s RFC is a touch rugby team for young people with high functioning disabilities such as, Autism, Down’s Syndrome and ADHD. We focus on the ability of a person with a disABILITY and look to remove and navigate barriers with and for people with disabilities to provide a sustained positive community engagement and participation through the power of sport.

It was a remarkable day which saw over 100 members, parents, volunteers and supporters all travel up to Coventry on what was another landmark for the Sarrie’s RFC programme. The one day tour consisted of a joint training session with a like-minded group who are involved with the Wasps community team along with tickets to watch the table topping clash between Wasps and Saracens.

The Sarrie’s RFC programme is funded by Alan Day Volkswagen, whose involvement not only financially but several of their staff are actively volunteering at each session. It has been an incredible journey so far with the team increasing in size by 25% in the last 6 months as well as forming new links with the Mill Hill School who also provide several volunteers regularly each week.

Paul Tanner, (Alan Day Volkswagen) said “it was an amazing opportunity to round off the season by taking the team on the road and playing against another team! The season has been a total success with so many of the members making progress on and off the pitch”

Tomas Gamage, (Saracens Sport Foundation) said “today has been truly fantastic, the tour has allowed us to challenge our members in so many ways that contribute to their progress. Seeing the development physically and socially and to display those skills in an unusual environment was astonishing to see, the whole team has made the Saracens Family very proud!”

Unfortunately Saracens couldn’t get the same success at the Ricoh Arena but nevertheless the whole touring party were still in high spirits after the game to make their way back to North London.
