Two-try debutant Lewington delighted with bonus-point win
Alex Lewington had a debut to remember scoring a try in each half as Saracens battled to a 32-21 victory over last season’s play-off placers Newcastle Falcons in the opening round of the Gallagher Premiership.
Not only did Sarries have the tough North East outfit as opposition but they had to contend with illness, injury and sin bins to secure a bonus point at Kingston Park.
Scotland international Sean Maitland was forced off with a dislocated finger 25 minutes into the match, allowing Lewington to shine on his first competitive appearance for the Men in Black.
Trotting in unopposed in the 40th minute, the former London Irish wing backed it up with an early second-half finish and was congratulated by all in red on the field.
He said: “All the boys make a point of celebrating all the little victories. They’re really important and it’s a great environment.
“I’m pretty happy (with two tries); obviously to get the win was more important.
“We made it hard for ourselves but we came through a lot over the weekend so the boys are so proud to get the bonus-point win and get the season off to a good start.”
Lewington continued: “Newcastle have developed into such a good team. We really respected them going into the game, we knew it was going to be a really tough challenge particularly at Kingston Park.
“I’ve played here a lot of time and been on the end of some losses and we knew we were in for a tough day so it’s really pleasing to get the win.”
