Vunipola out to build on accuracy
Mako Vunipola wants Saracens to be as productive as they were against Wasps when they head to Twickenham this weekend.
The Wolfpack reached the Aviva Premiership final with in a record-breaking 57-33 win in the semi-final at Allianz Park last time out and face an Exeter Chiefs side who eased past Newcastle Falcons.
England Player of the Year Vunipola played 72 minutes in the victory of Dai Young’s outfit, making 16 carries, and says Sarries need to build on their impressive display.
He said: “We’ve reviewed the game and we’re pleased with how it went but we still realise there have been things to work on.
“Going into the Wasps game we talked about as a forward pack putting out imprint on the game and outmuscle them; I thought we did that.
“The most pleasing thing for us is we were accurate as well and it allowed us to hold on to the ball, build phases and wear them down.
“This year we’ve shown glimpses of that but sometimes our inaccuracy as let us down and let the other team off the hook so we’re pleased with that and now want to build on that this weekend.”
Despite media questioning their mid-season form, Saracens finished second in the league and are now in their fourth final in five campaigns.
The sequence before Christmas was unfamiliar but nothing changed with regards to the squad’s focus.
“For us, we knew when we were going through that slump we still had to believe in the way we did things and it wasn’t a case of looking too far ahead,” Vunipola said.
“We’re obviously very pleased to be involved and have the opportunity to play this weekend but we realise it’s been a journey through the whole season.”
