Pack performance pleases Shaw
Saracens Storm coach Joe Shaw praised some “huge” personal performances after his side clinched the A-League title last night.
The Storm ran out 19-27 winners in a tight contest against Worcester Cavaliers and Shaw reserved praise for his half-backs and forwards who he described as ‘brilliant’.
“First and foremost, tonight was a superb team performance,” said Shaw speaking after the game. “There were though some really impressive personal performances. I thought in those conditions our generals dictated the play superbly well. Ben (Spencer) and Nils (Mordt) put us in the right positions all game.
“Up front every player fronted up, but our front row were superb. Rhys Gill led from the front, as did Jared Saunders.
“I must give a special mention to young Biyi Alo. I thought the intensity and physicality Biyi brought in that first half set the standard for everybody. It’s great to see such a talented young tighthead play so well at the set-piece against such an experienced front-row and pack. He did brilliantly.
Shaw also reserved praise for lock forward Hayden Smith, who had a superb game making a series of crunching tackles in crucial parts of the contest: "Hayden had come back after a month on the side-lines and gave us an unbelievable amount of energy. The hits he put in gave us so much life and energy. His performance tonight exemplified what we’re all about."
