Prem 7s a 'great opportunity' - Barrell

Saracens Academy Manager Don Barrell will be taking charge of a youthful Saracens 7s squad at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday evening in the Premiership 7s.

A host of Saracens Academy starlets have been included in Friday’s 12-man squad, and Barrell (who represented England at 7s level) believes Friday evenings round of games will provide a “great opportunity” for some of Saracens younger players.

“It’s a great opportunity for some of our academy guys to get some exposure at a Premiership ground and against Premiership opposition,” said Barrell.

“Sevens is a great format for these players to hone their skills and showcase their talent. They are some exciting players included, who have the chance to show people what they can do".

Two members of Barrell’s squad are Kenyan duo Samuel Oliech and Ian Stewart Minjire, who are over in the UK as part of the Saracens Global Network player pathway scheme from Global Network club Imapala Saracens – and Barrell is looking forward to seeing the duo in action on Friday evening.

He said: “Just as it is for the Academy guys and the rest of the squad it is a fantastic opportunity for Ian and Sammy. They have been over here training at Saracens for a few weeks and have done well. I think it shows how healthy the Global Network partnership is here at the club that these two guys have been included”.
