REA Regional 7's Glory!
Saracens Sport Foundation created the Rugby Education Academy to support the development of the best young rugby talent in the North London area, whilst continuing academic study. The project is a three-way partnership between Saracens, Barnet and Southgate College and London Skolars rugby league club.
The Rugby Education Academy students at Barnet and Southgate College have experienced all forms and codes of rugby within the first two and a half months of the academic year. Huge progress has been made on the Rugby Union front with the REA team showing promising development and progression, narrowly losing out to Moulton College and the Colne Academy.
The team then focussed on Rugby League as they took on Moreton Academy in Wolverhampton. The group excelled in horrendous weather conditions showing great pride, work rate and togetherness which ultimately lead to a well-deserved victory.
Last week the group’s attention switched to rugby 7’s. The London Regional tournament was held at Barnes RFC with an opportunity to represent their region at National level in Bath later on in the year. After a slow start, following our defeat to them last year, the Barnet and Southgate Bears showed great effort and commitment to beat Richmond in the last play of the game. The team went into the last fixture against Havering College knowing that a win would send them through to represent their region and after conceding two tries, the Bears were down by 12-0 with just 4 minutes on the clock. However, the culture and belief that the group has and continues to build, shone through and when the final whistle blew, it was 29-12 to the Barnet and Southgate Bears! A fantastic achievement by the whole team and one that we hope will supply real momentum as we return to Rugby Union this week.
