Sanderson happy with Sanlam Shield win
Forward’s coach Alex Sanderson was full of praise for Sunday’s Sanlam Challenge fixture against DHL Western Province, as Saracens ran out convincing 46-22 winners against the South African Currie Cup Champions.
Speaking after the game, Sanderson said; “It’s a brilliant thing to host an event like this amidst of all the pressure of the Premiership and Europe. To get these guys over here to play quality opposition that maybe you’d never have the chance of facing, is brilliant. Hopefully we put a good game on and I think both sets of lads did that.
“We’ve won the first trophy on offer this season and hopefully it won’t be the last one we win either. It was a case of bragging rights for a few South African players we have in the squad, it was a really important game for them today.”
Saracens beat their South African opponents on an enjoyable November afternoon in a game where wing duo Chris Ashton and David Strettle produced eye-catching performances. Sanderson was full of praise for the Saracens wing-pair.
“They have been outstanding, not just today or this season but they have been playing very well for the last two seasons now,” said Sanderson.
“You have to praise our halfbacks for putting us in the right positions. They both have commitment to chase down every kick, and you wonder why they score so many tries with the ball bouncing up? It’s because they chase down everything.
“Stretts’ ability to sniff a chance out from ten metres out is second to none and he’s doing very well at the moment."
On Chris Ashton, he added after Sunday's game; “Today was typical Ashy. He just lurks on that inside shoulder and he works incredibly hard. He came off his wing by amount 40/50 metres to take that ball to finish what was a well worked try.”
