Saracens & Northampton – it’s personal
Saracens play Northampton Saints at Allianz Park on Sunday 23 November, renewing a rivalry that has become perhaps the most intense in English rugby.
It started in May 2010 when Saracens defeated Saints in the Premiership semi-final at Franklin’s Gardens and inadvertently upset the home team by singing a victory song in the away dressing room – the fact that Saracens players sing this song after every win, and that no offence was intended, seemed to make no difference.
Ever since, the rivalry has crackled… flammable coaches Dorian West and Brendan Venter clashing on the touchline, visiting Saracens supporters singing ‘Oh when the Saints go marching home’ as Northampton fans headed for home after a heavy defeat at the Gardens, jubilant Saints fans celebrating an historic Premiership semi-final win at Allianz Park in May 2013.
Then the two clubs met in the 2014 Premiership final at Twickenham…. with Northampton winning in the most controversial circumstances.
Whisper it… the rivalry is underpinned by mutual respect from the boardroom to the changing room.
Even so, sparks will fly at Allianz Park on Sunday 23 November. Book now at www.saracens.com
