Saracens v Leicester - Match Preview
Saracens play Leicester this weekend at a sold-out Allianz Park. Henry Fraser previews the visitors.
Form guide, won 5, lost 3, drawn 1.
For the defending Premiership Champions it hasn't been their best start to a season. They currently sit fifth in the league, ten points behind Sarries. However, as this season has already shown, things can change very quickly.
After ending last season in such great form a hefty injury list halted the momentum of the Tigers. At one point they only had a single fit centre. But they managed to ride the wave of injuries and with key players returning over the last few weeks has boosted the team and put them on a good run of form.
The Tigers are always looking to play and use the power game to break through teams. Their backs are extremely strong out wide and tough forwards up front. Unusually they are only fourth in the try scoring charts with nineteen and only six have come away from home. They start strong scoring most in the first quarter of the game so Sarries must shut them down fast. They also finish strong in the final quarter, just like Sarries do. It will make for an interesting and no doubt exciting final twenty minutes.
In defence they have been very miserly only conceding eleven tries, the fewest in the league so far this season, and only five away from home. Sarries will have to continue their great attack at home to break through their tough defence.
One thing the Tigers always bring is a strong scrum. With two Lions and a tough scrummaging Argentinian in their front row, it's gives them a great platform to attack from. Sarries are going to have to scrum hard to disrupt the Tigers ball.
With both teams coming off big Henieken Cup weekends, they will be wanting to get fight back into their premiership campaigns. After a recent rivalry that is always building, there is no doubt the Tigers' will be wanting to upset the party on their first trip to Allianz Park.
23/2/13 Leicester Tigers 27 - 32 Saracens
9/11/12 Saracens 38 - 21 Leicester Tigers
15/9/12 Saracens 9 - 9 Leicester Tigers
Players to watch
Vereniki Goneva - With Manu Tuilagi out injured Vereniki Goneva had some big shoes to fill. His shirt move from winger to outside centre has been very smooth and effective for the Tigers. He is big, quick and very powerful as well as being full of Fijian flair. Let him have room and he can create huge gaps for his big wingers to cause trouble.
