Saracens Women amongst National Rugby Awards nominees

Saracens Women make final shortlist for 'Team of the Year' at National Rugby Awards. Maggie Alphonsi & Zira Handley also in the running for 'Player of the Season' award.

After a historic season where Rob Cain’s side secured a league and cup double, the north Londoners plus players Maggie Alphonsi and Zira Handley have all been nominated for the inaugural National Rugby Awards that take place at Twickenham Stadium on September 2.

The awards celebrate the achievements of amateurs and professional clubs across the country.

Saracens and England flanker Maggie Alphonsi has been nominated of the ‘Women’s Player of the Year’ award. Alphonsi’s achievements in a 17-year association with Saracens are unrivalled. The 71-time capped England star played a key role in Saracens double win, scoring a try in the League Championship winning fixture against Wasps Ladies.

Full-back Zira Handley is the other Saracens player nominated for the Player of the Year gong. In a remarkable season, Handley’s try-scoring efforts in Saracens successful Cup campaign highlighted her undoubted promise. She was the undoubted star of the campaign, running in an astonishing 19 tries in seven games for Sarries, bagging a first half hat-trick in the Ladies Cup Final. Handley crossed for 27 tries in all competitions.

Saracens Women have also been shortlisted for the Team of the Year award after the north Londoners enjoyed a stellar season securing both the Premiership and National Cup titles - the first time doing the double since 2008. The club were undefeated in all but 2 league games this season and secured winning bonus points in 9 Premiership matches.

Saracens Women Chairwomen Laura Eddie, said: “We’re delighted to be included in the inaugural National Rugby Awards nominations. The success of the squad is down to the outstanding commitment of the players, all of whom are unpaid amateurs however perform like devout professionals. They are expected to cram in hours of training on and off the pitch between their full time jobs which is truly inspiring.

“The club is also committed to developing new young talent and recently supported the first ever Saracens Girls Academy Day at Allianz Park which attracted over 120 girls. We wish to become role models for this next generation and hope many of these girls will go onto join the junior section and become Saracens Women’s stars of the future.”
