Saracens Women win season opener
Saracens Women opened their Premiership campaign with a tight 19-22 victory away to London rivals, Wasps Ladies.
Wasps drew first blood in the local derby with winger Becca Rowe dotting down and Edwards converting to put the home side up 7-0. Having recently joined Saracens fresh from the USA’s World Cup campaign, Emilie Bydwell used her experience to speed around the outside to score moments later on her debut, but the try was not converted.
Saracens continued to attack at pace with lock, Poppy Cleall breaking through the Wasps defence and the ball then recycled quickly out to the left wing where flanker Maggie Alphonsi touched down in the corner. Wasps retaliated with another (unconverted) try from Rowe and a penalty from Edwards before halftime, putting the home side up 12-10 at half time.
The second half saw a continuation of the fast, dynamic rugby from both sides. Strong runs from Casey and new signing Vicky Fleetwood gave Saracens good field position allowing Lauren Cattel to sneak down the blindside and score in the corner.
Saracens displayed their dominance at scrum time as no. 8 Sonia Green picked from the base to set up Alphonsi for her second try minutes before the final whistle, stretching Saracens to a ten point lead. Wasps however had the final word as winger, Michaela Staniford dotted down out wide. Edwards converted to bring the match to a close. Wasps 19 – Saracens 22.
Saracens Women travel down to the West country this weekend to meet Bristol.
