Spencer keen to kick-on
Ben Spencer is looking to build-up on his Man of the Match performance away to the Ospreys in Saracens 9-21 win away in Neath.
Not only did Spencer produce a tactical kicking master class away in South Wales, but the former England Saxon half-back came on against Western Province and played a lead role in David Strettle’s second half try in an impressive 20 minute cameo two days later.
Speaking about his recent form, Spencer said; “I really enjoyed last weekend, as I want to get as much game time in as possible. Friday was a brilliant win up in Neath in pretty terrible conditions, and then on Sunday we played a pretty strong Western Province side, so it has been pretty good weekend.
“I’m looking forward to getting some more time out there on the pitch, and we have some massive games coming up. I’m just trying to take my form from one game to the next, I’m quite happy with the way I’m playing recently and hopefully I can build on that into the upcoming weeks."
Spencer is vying for the Saracens No.9 & No.21 jersey’s alongside two of the squads most experienced campaigners, Neil de Kock and Richard Wigglesworth, and the 24-year-old scrum-half looks to the success of hooker Jamie George as the example to follow, after the England Saxons hooker served his apprenticeship at the club alongside John Smit and Schalk Brits.
“Jamie is a great example,” said Spencer. “He has done brilliantly, been patient and is now a member of the Saracens 100 Club. He’s in the mix for selection week-in-week-out, and that’s a place that I want to be at as well. We have two brilliant number nines at the club, who are playing some great rugby, so I know that I need to keep my head down, keep playing well and keep working hard - hopefully that will pay off.”
