Super Sub Spencer - 'We dug deep'
Ben Spencer came off the bench to produce a kicking masterclass in Saracens 22-17 win over the Newcastle Falcons.
The exciting half-back replaced experienced No9 Neil de Kock on the half hour mark, when the former Springbok scrum half had to leave the field with a knock to head.
Spencer was superb when he entered the fray. Tactically, the Stockport born schemer was on the money, with a series of probing kicks and darts from the base of the ruck continuously causing a well drilled Falcons defence problems.
It was off the kicking tee though where Spencer made his biggest impact and ultimately won the game for the Saracens, with three well hit penalty kicks edging Saracens in front as they held on to a hard-fought win.
Speaking after the game, Spencer said: “We always knew it would be a tough game. It came down to the last few minutes once again, and credit to them they are a strong side. We really had to dig deep today.
“We knew we had to stick to our strategy and play high up the field. I think credit must go to our lads for sticking to the game plan - it paid off in the end."
He added: “I enjoyed being on the pitch today and hopefully I can get some more game time in the upcoming weeks.”
