Welwyn Students Lead The Way!

Friday 15th November saw the very first Welwyn & Hatfield year 3&4 tag rugby festival take place at Welwyn RFC.

12 teams took part in a ‘participation’ format spread across three pools in a round robin style afternoon, this gave pupils the chance to showcase the skills they had learnt in the previous terms coaching from Saracens Sport Foundation coaches.

The day however saw the young sports leaders steal the show; eighteen year 10 and 11 pupils from Stanborough and Sir Frederic Osborn Secondary Schools completed a days leadership course in refereeing and coaching tag rugby back in October. These students now had the chance to take charge officiating on each pitch and showed how its done with fantastic enthusiasm and a mature stance, even giving teams coaching sessions in between games!

“It’s fantastic to see the boys excelling in something they have taken a real passion to, they have taken the privileged opportunity with great maturity and professionalism and have shown what a great tool the leadership programme is, most of them are already talking about the next step they can take to gain further qualifications”
